Stages of A Hand-colored Portrait

Aug 29, 2018 | By: Serena P Charlebois

I began my career more than 27 years ago with my signature style, The Hand-colored Wall Portrait.

It is the style that I am best known for.

In the beginning of my portrait career, I was captivated by the nostalgic and timeless qualities that a sepia toned and hand- colored image evoked.

Hand coloring or tinting of photographs dates back to 1839 shortly after the introduction of the daguerreotype image. The photographic artist wished to make their photographs more natural and lifelike.

The art of hand coloring photographs and the products used to do so, hasn’t changed much in over 150 years.

Each is carefully printed, toned to a beautifully soft warm brown tone, and painstakingly hand-colored. This signature technique creates a one-of-a-kind art piece that has a timeless quality.
